Hey!
How was everyone’s week? Does anyone else feel like 4 day weeks sometimes feel longer than 5 day weeks? I was discussing this with a co-worker, and he decided that it is because we expect everything to fly by because the week is shorter that we are ultimately disappointed when it doesn’t. I tend to agree with him.
Last weekend, I was fortunate enough to visit my fabulous sister in Washington, D.C. This was my first time seeing where she lives and works. I ate some fabulous food and had a fantastic time.
On Saturday night, Sarah and her roommates threw a Mardi Gras party. Her roommate Steven made almost everything that they served at the party. To say the food was just simply delicious would be doing Steven an injustice. It was amazing!
Red beans and rice
Bisquick sausage and cheese balls
Meat and cheese log
Chocolate bread pudding
I don’t even like bread pudding normally, but this was definitely one of the best desserts I’ve had in a while.
On Sunday morning, my sister and I went to brunch at Sticky Rice, a restaurant in her neighborhood. I might have said this before, but it bears repeating that I would eat sushi EVERY DAY if it wasn’t for the fact that it is expensive and I could die of mercury poisoning. I was super excited that Sarah wanted to split a bunch of rolls because I love being able to try lots of different things.
The Millenium Roll
-Lump crab meat, smoked salmon, eel, and cream cheese drizzled with siracha and scallions
On the left side was some sort of inside out tuna roll(sorry forgot the name!)
In the bowl-Billy Goat’s Gruff
-Yellowtail wrapped around goat cheese broiled and topped with ponzu sauce, scallions, and sesame seeds
On the top and bottom of plate-The Crazy Calamari
-A monster roll with tempura-fried calamari, tamago, cilantro, cucumbers and sriracha rolled in tobiko and panko flakes
*all descriptions from their website
Everything was amazing but my favorite was probably The Crazy Calamari. I had never had cilantro in a roll before and it was a great addition.
After an amazing brunch, we headed over to the Newseum. Despite the fact that there are few museums I dislike, I can say without a doubt this is in my top 5 best museums I have ever been to. It is just so interactive and full of so many different types of exhibits.
Since it was Valentine’s Day, my sister and I got a 2 for 1 special. Score!
It wasn’t until I was inside the museum that I realized where I had seen it before. One of my favorite bloggers had a post about her visit here.
In the basement, there are actual pieces from the Berlin Wall.
My favorite parts of the museum were the exhibit which showed The Sports Illustrated photography of Walter Ioss and the Pulitzer Prize Photographs gallery. But all the exhibits were awesome. I could have spent days there.
I also had the opportunity to play the role of reporter.
It was a fun experience to read from a teleprompter and feel like a real reporter.
Throughout the museum, there were tons of great quotes.
One of my favorites:
The whole experience was a blast.
Afterwards, Sarah and I had an early dinner at a place called Vapiano. It is a chic self serve pasta, pizza, and salad restaurant. You tap a card at each place you get food or drink from and then when you leave you pay your tab.
I got the POMODORO E SPINACI and because I was with an insider (my sister) I found out I could order it spicy so the sauce had a marvelous kick. I always think New York needs more restaurants like this. Restaurants that are somewhere in between fast food and full service.
But look here:
Vapiano is coming to New York in Fall 2010. Yes!
The whole weekend was full of great food and great fun. Thanks Sarah for showing me your city!

Ah! So glad you got to check out DC and the newseum!!
What an incredible weekend! The food looks so good. I love red beans and rice. Sausage balls seem to be a popular party food
I love the concept of Vapiano! Its like a high class college dinning common!
I love DC! I have been only been there twice (for two races) but I love it there. The restaurants are amazing.
Last time we were there, we walked by the Newseum and I was wondering if it was any good. Looks like we will have to go check it out the next time we are there.
What a cool museum! Ari’s parents went a few weeks ago and it sounded like so much fun.
I hear ya on the sushi.. wish I could eat it every day, too!
That sushi looks wonderful! I could eat it every single day.
The Philly roll is my favorite. Actually…anything with cream cheese is wonderful. lol
